This is a moment in my life I will never forget. This was taken by me at the killing fields. I'm not sure what I was expecting but this wasn't it. We did all of Phanum Penh in one day and this was our first stop. It was early in the morning and our driver drove us out here and dropped us off. There was a little booth where you had to pay a couple of bucks then you were free to walk around. There were maybe 5 other people there. There was a nice modern monument but other than that there wasn't too much to it. There were craters in the ground and mass grave signs telling how many people were found there there. There was a pathway that we walked along. Me and Anna took our time, taking it all in. It was about 10 minutes later that I was standing in this spot. I was looking at the ground thinking, what are all these white things? and why is there all this fabric in the ground? I mentioned it to Anna and she replied, "those are bones". It took me another minute to have that sink in. I looked closer, yup...human bones, and the fabric was the peoples clothes. I could see a finger...I was standing on who knows how many bones. I couldn't believe it. I thought this was the place where 40 000 people were killed but that it had been cleaned up, that after all these years they had been exumed and given a proper burial. The truth is there were so many people killed there they have no idea of the true numbers. They have found 40 000 but you could see that there were huge areas not even touched yet. As we walked on there were buckets filled with bones that washed up from the last rain. I swear I could smell death, I'll never forget that smell.
